La Palmyre, a famous resort
La Palmyre is a famous resort for
the beach, the forest and the zoo.
By walking along the road
which goes from the centre to the beach, one can see some old, a little
anachronistic, villas in this resort of modern buildings.
These villas
were built in 1900 in a location called "Le Clapet" (The Valve), which
is the name of a device built to close a canal.
At this time, the forest
railway was put into service to serve the needs of the ‘Water and
Forests’ administration.
The holiday-makers took the forest train to go from Royan to Le Clapet.
In 1966, Le Clapet became officially La Palmyre, sea resort of the
municipality of Les Mathes, situated inland on a limestone hill.
The
beaches, the port, the bay of Bonne-Anse
All the houses have been built
back into the forest a few hundred metres away from the shore, which
makes them invisible from the coast and because of this, the beauty of
the maritime landscape and its natural coastline are protected.
The way the port is constructed with the long promenade along the sea
front, makes it easy for all the seaside activities.
Cycling and Walking
Cycling is the favourite means of transport for the holiday-makers.
Everything is done to make it straightforward and uncomplicated for
cyclists.
From the port, the cycle track joins Saint-Palais-sur-Mer by following
first of all the sea shore and then it goes through the forest up to the
point of the Grande-Côte.
For those who would like to walk, starting from the port, the path leads
to the lighthouse of La Coubre by following the beach of Bonne-Anse.
