The "Carrelets"

The "carrelets" will quickly become part of the images which you remember of the coastal landscape

A "carrelet" is a hut for fishermen. Built of wood on piles and standing with feet in the water, it is linked to the cliff by a pontoon. The big square net, suspended from a mast, is lowered and raised by means of a winch with a counterweight. One finds ‘carrelets’ along the estuary of the Gironde and on the coast of Charente.

There are also plenty to be found along the coast of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. You can see them on the path from the Pont du Diable going in the direction of the Grande Côte. They seem isolated on rocks or they form picturesque lines along the small beach called ‘conche’ of Concié and around the puits de l’ Auture.

They provide an ideal subject for photographers, with an inexhaustible amount of possibilities to take shots of them from all angles or in the foreground of photographs of the coast, of the ocean and of sunsets.
