Saint-Palais-sur-Mer
If
you look at an old postcard which shows the beginning of sea bathing,
you will recognise some villas which still remain around the beach and
you will notice that the beach is named the BUREAU-les-BAINS or the
BUREAU-St-PALAIS.
This name came about because of the existence of the
customs office established in 1840.
It was only in 1920 when the sea
resort was rapidly expanding, that it was called SAINT-PALAIS-sur-MER.

Within recent
years, the lake of Saint-Palais, near the marketplace, has become a
place for relaxation appreciated all the year round. In summer, it is
peaceful, a few hundred metres from the excitement of the beaches.
Off season, it is pleasant walking around the lake, shielded from sea winds.

The market, open
every morning all year long, during the season is the focal point of the
morning activity of the resort.
It is a delight to walk between the abundant displays of fish,
seafoods, oysters, meat from the "près salés", which is meat fattened
in the fields by the sea ,"rillons charentais" (potted pork meat),
melons, goats milk cheeses, pineau, wines, brioches,...Everything is
