Saint-Palais-sur-Mer,
from
the beach of Le Platin
to the beach of La Grande Côte
After the Pont du Diable, the path goes along the beach of Le Platin.
At
end of the beach, before coming back to the cliffs, walk
for about one hundred metres inland to see the Chapel of the Air Pilots.
The chapel, Notre-Dame-du-Platin, was built in 1904 to mark the exploits
of the first airmen.
In the background behind the Chapel, stands the
lighthouse of Terre-Nègre, just a hundred metres away.
Back by the shore again, one arrives at the Puits de l’Auture,
surrounded with ‘carrelets’, square fishing nets.
The sound of the
waves which crash and pound outside the abyss is impressive during a
storm.
The walk continues facing the sea up to the rocky platform of the
Grande Côte.
This view point is unique with, from left to right, the
estuary of the Gironde, the Pointe de Grave, the lighthouse of Cordouan,
the immense beach with the bunkers in the middle, the coast of La
Palmyre, the cove of Bonne-Anse and the lighthouse of La Coubre.
In stormy weather, it is a spectacular sight with sprays of water rising
high above the rocks. |
